Privacy Policy

How Komos Solutions Ltd collects, uses, and retains personal data for Second Sight, under UK GDPR.

Who we are

Komos Solutions Ltd (“Komos Solutions”, “we”, “us”) is a limited company registered in England and Wales. We are the data controller for personal data processed through the Second Sight mobile and desktop app and this website (together, the “Service”).

Registered address: Chadbrook House, Westmead Drive, Newbury, Berkshire, RG14 7DJ, United Kingdom.

This policy is written under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. Contact us at hello@komossolutions.com.

What we collect

We collect the information you give us, information created when you use the Service, and limited technical data needed to run it securely.

  • Account and profile. Name, email address, password (stored in hashed form), sign-in method (email and password, Google, or Apple), optional date of birth, optional country, and optional mobile number if you add it in My Account.
  • Library and usage. Titles in My Library, playback position, bookmarks, and app settings such as theme and accessibility preferences.
  • Voice search. If you use voice search, your device or platform speech service turns speech into search text. We do not store audio recordings of your voice.
  • Support and feedback. The content of emails or in-app messages you send us.
  • Device and security. IP address, operating system, and similar logs used for administration, security, and diagnosing faults.
  • Payments. If you buy a subscription or in-app product, Apple, Google, or another payment provider processes the payment. We do not store full card numbers.

Second Sight does not access precise device location (GPS) and does not request location permissions on mobile platforms. We do not sell personal data. We do not use personal data for advertising.

Who the Service is for, children, and date of birth

Second Sight is a mixed-audience audiobook player for school-age children (from about age 6), young people, and adults. It is not designed for children aged 5 and under. The catalogue includes juvenile, young-adult, and adult titles. Some titles are not suitable for every age group.

A parent or guardian should create or supervise an account for anyone under 13 (or under 16 where UK GDPR parental-consent rules apply). Google and Apple also set their own minimum ages for Sign in with Google and Sign in with Apple.

Date of birth is optional. If it is provided, we use it only to filter catalogue search results:

  • under 12 — juvenile titles only;
  • 12 to 17 — juvenile and young-adult titles;
  • 18 and over — the full catalogue.

We do not use date of birth for advertising, profiling for ads, or selling to third parties. We do not show third-party ads in the app.

If date of birth is not given, we treat the account as an adult account and do not apply that search filter. The filter is a help for choosing titles; it is not a guarantee that every remaining title is appropriate, and it does not apply to every way of opening a book (for example a title already in My Library). You can add or change date of birth in My Account.

We collect the same kinds of account data (such as name and email) whether the user is a child, teen, or adult, because an account is required to use the signed-in Service. We do not seek extra data from children. Voice search is optional and we do not store voice recordings.

A parent or guardian can ask us to correct or delete a child’s data, or close the account, by emailing hello@komossolutions.com from a contact address we can verify, or by using our account and data deletion process.

How we use personal data

We process personal data to:

  • create and manage your account and sign you in;
  • provide the catalogue, library, playback, and accessibility features;
  • apply optional age-based catalogue filtering when you have given a date of birth;
  • send verification and account-recovery emails;
  • respond to support requests;
  • keep the Service secure and diagnose problems; and
  • comply with the law.

Our lawful bases under UK GDPR are:

  • Contract — to provide the Service you asked for (account, library, catalogue, playback).
  • Legitimate interests — security, logs, and improving reliability, balanced against your rights.
  • Consent — optional date of birth, microphone access for voice search, and optional website cookies beyond those that are strictly necessary.
  • Legal obligation — where we must keep or disclose information (for example tax or a binding legal request).

We do not send marketing email unless you have asked us to. You can opt out at any time by emailing hello@komossolutions.com.

Processors and sharing

We use other organisations to help run the Service. They process personal data only on our instructions, or as independent controllers where the law treats them that way (for example when you sign in with Google or Apple).

  • Hosting. The Service is hosted on infrastructure operated for us in the United Kingdom.
  • Google. Sign in with Google; on-device or platform speech recognition if you use voice search on Android or similar; Google Play if you install from there; Google Drive only if you choose to access files that way.
  • Apple. Sign in with Apple; speech recognition on Apple platforms if you use voice search; the App Store if you install from there.
  • Email delivery. We use an email provider to send verification codes, password-reset messages, and replies to support.
  • Payments. Apple, Google, or Stripe (if used for a purchase) process payment details. Their privacy policies apply to that processing.

We may disclose personal data if required by law, to protect Komos Solutions or our users, or to a buyer if we sell or transfer relevant parts of the business. We do not share personal data with third parties for their marketing.

International transfers

Some processors, including Google and Apple, may process data outside the United Kingdom (including the United States). Where UK GDPR requires it, we rely on an adequacy decision or appropriate safeguards such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or Standard Contractual Clauses.

How long we keep data

  • Active accounts. We keep account, library, and profile data (including date of birth if you gave one) for as long as the account exists.
  • After account deletion. We aim to delete associated personal data from live systems within 30 days. Copies may remain on encrypted backups for up to 90 days, then are removed.
  • Support emails. We keep correspondence as long as needed to deal with your request and for a reasonable period afterwards.
  • Legal and finance. We may keep records for longer where the law requires it (for example transaction records) or where data has been anonymised so it can no longer identify you.

You can delete your account in the app, or request deletion of some or all data without closing the account, using our account and data deletion page.

Cookies

This website uses strictly necessary cookies and local storage (for example theme and cookie preferences). Optional analytics or marketing cookies are used only if you allow them. See cookie preferences for details and to change your choices. The Second Sight app does not use website cookies.

Security

We use technical and organisational measures to protect personal data, including HTTPS and hashed passwords. No transmission over the internet is completely secure. You should keep your password confidential.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you can ask us to:

  • access the personal data we hold about you;
  • correct inaccurate data;
  • erase data (including some or all data while keeping your account, where that is possible);
  • restrict or object to certain processing;
  • receive a copy of data you provided, in a portable format; and
  • withdraw consent where we rely on consent (for example removing date of birth or turning off voice search).

These rights are not always absolute. We will not charge a fee for a request unless it is manifestly unfounded or excessive, in which case we may charge a reasonable fee or refuse the request, as UK GDPR allows.

Email hello@komossolutions.com from your registered address. You can also update some profile fields in My Account in the app.

You can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk. We would appreciate the chance to resolve your concern first.

Other sites

The Service may link to other websites or catalogue sources. Their privacy policies apply to those sites. Please read them before you submit personal data there.

Changes

We may update this policy by publishing a new version on this page. The date below shows when it was last changed. Continued use of the Service after a change means you should read the updated policy.
